In the Nature Exchange: Wild Waters
It’s time to bring out the canoes at the Nature Center; and here in the Nature Exchange, you can get to know all the little critters sharing the rivers and ponds.  Stop by and see if you can guess which animals do what and where in the waters around us.


 

Story Time by the River

WHEN: May 2nd at 10:30AM

Join volunteers for a fun story time at CNC. Using books, puppets, and other props, they tell stories all about nature. Ages 3 – 5.


 

Creature Feature – Wonderful Watersheds

WHEN: Thursdays and Fridays at 4 PM and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 PM

All Ages. Join a CNC Naturalist to discover more about the Chattahoochee River watershed and its inhabitants! This watershed supports not only plants and wildlife but also a huge human population.  Learn about the importance of this watershed and visit with a CNC resident animal up-close.


 

Trail Hikes

WHEN: Saturdays and Sundays at 1:00PM

A CNC docent guides you on a journey through the CNC trails using biofacts and activities to spark your “natural” curiosity.


 

Feeding Time

WHEN: Tuesdays and Saturdays at 4:00PM

Join a naturalist for an in-depth look at one of our resident animals as our Wildlife Department feeds them!


 

Animal Encounter

WHEN: Sundays at 4:00 PM

Learn about the native wildlife living at CNC through a 30-minute live animal presentation with one of our naturalists or docents.


 

River Canoe Trips

WHEN: Saturdays and Sundays in May, 6:00 PM – Dusk

Ages 6 to adult. Special May Member Pricing: $30 Non-Members/$20 Members ($5 off regular price).
Calling all River Rats – it’s time to get out on the River!  Join us for a paddling adventure as you discover the animals and plants that call the Chattahoochee home. CNC naturalists will lead you on a journey down river as you see it in new ways and discover why this resource is so important.  (Also offered June through October; check the next two CNC newsletters for additional trips.) Concert featuring Victoria Banks and Billy Montana

WHEN: May 4th at 8:00 PM

Georgia’s own James Casto brings his popular songwriters-in-the-round concert series to the Chattahoochee Nature Center.
Casto is joined by Nashville hit-makers Victoria Banks and Billy Montana.  Victoria was the 2010 CCMA Female Country Artist of the Year and wrote Sara Evans smash hit “Saints & Angels” as well as songs for Jessica Simpson, Doc Walker, One More Girl, and many others.  Montana’s impressive catalog of songs includes #1 hits for Garth Brooks, Jo Dee Messina and Sara Evans.  Joining the writers this night will be NYC saxophonist Matt Blanchard and the incredible Jim Hettinger on B3/accordion/keys.  Concert is rain or shine and held outdoors under the beautiful Ben Brady Pavilion.

 


Canoe Merit Badge

WHEN: May 5th from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM

$25 per scout. Discover all about canoes, the safety involved, different paddling strokes and more!  Learn how to canoe and practice your new skills while paddling on one of CNC’s ponds! To register, contact the Scout Coordinator at 770-992-2055 x 249 or email  scouts@chattnaturecenter.org.


 

Carnivorous Plant Workshop

WHEN: May 5th from 1:30 PM – 3:00 PM

Ages 10 – Adult. Included with General Admission. Advance Registration Required by May 3.
Join us for an informative program on the bogs of the SE and the interesting carnivorous plants that make these habitats their home. After the program we will go to the greenhouse and show you how to grow and maintain these beautiful plants in your garden. From 3 – 5pm nursery open to purchase carnivorous plants.  After this program we will open up the nursery for people to purchase many carnivorous plants that have been propagated here at the center. Many other plants will be available too in case you missed our spring plant sale.

Canoeing 101

WHEN: Sunday, May 6 and Saturday, May 26 from 12:30 – 2pm

Ages 5 – Adult. $15 General Public/$10 CNC members (price is per person). Join us to discover the basics of canoeing including boat basics and paddling techniques.  Spend some time on one of CNC’s ponds to practice your newly-acquired skills.


 

Birding Canoe Trip

WHEN: May 12th from 7:30 AM – 11:30 AM

$40 Non-Members/$30 Members (price per person and includes admission CNC.)
Pre-registration required. Have you been looking for an extended canoe trip with CNC?  Well, here it is!  Join CNC naturalist Alicia Evans and Master Birder Zelia Lebeau on a canoe trip along the Chattahoochee.  Our trip will focus specifically on birds in the area and exploring the hidden backwaters along the river – a treat for birders of any skill-level!

Rockin’ on the River

COME FLY WITH US AT OUR ROCKIN’ AT THE RIVER GALA!! 

The Board of Trustees of the Chattahoochee Nature Center invites you to Come Fly With Us on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at their annual “Rockin’ at the River Gala”. The beautiful natural setting along the river in Roswell sets the stage for this year’s 10th annual benefit for the nature center. The party kicks off at 6:30 pm, when Patrons and Sponsors arrive early for an exclusive VIP Reception, including a live musical performance on the Plaza, complete with passed hors d’oeuvres and signature cocktails. The main event kicks off in Kingfisher Hall with signature cocktails served to each guest as they arrive at 7:30 pm, dressed for the season in spring chic attire. Guests can mix and mingle while enjoying the fabulous food prepared by The Avenue Catering and cocktails from the open bar, as they listen to live music. An extensive Silent and short Live Auction and other surprises provide additional treasures and fun.

Home School Science Monday

WHEN: May 21st from 12:30 PM – 3:00 PM

All Ages. Learn over lunch about our beautiful bats and International Year of the Bat. Afterwards, head to the Nature Exchange for trading, project help and to solve the science experiment of the month!


 

All About Nature Social Club  

WHEN: May 24th  from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Ages 16 – Adult. $10 General Public, $5 CNC Members.  Free for CNC Volunteers and Master Naturalist Graduates. Join our monthly Dine and Discover potluck!  Spend your evening socializing with like-minded folks and learning from John Jenson with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.  After our potluck, join in a program about reptiles that enchant and mystifies – snakes!  We will uncover what snakes are common in the area and dispel some modern myths.  Visit our website for details


 

Drum Circle

WHEN: May 25th from 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM

$5 donation requested. Join us in a new monthly event!  Drum the stars into the sky. Bring your djembe, bongos or other rhythmic instrument and take part in one of the most basic celebrations of music.  All experience levels and spectators welcome.


 

Start of Summer Play Day

WHEN: May 26th from 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM

All Ages. Come out and play for Memorial Day! Kick off the summer with parachutes, hula hoops, sidewalk chalk, Frisbees and more. We supply the toys, you supply the imagination.
Laughing Matters: 12pm
Start off Play Day the right way with giggles and guffaws. Laughing Matters’ improvisation will tickle the funny bone as you share your ideas and take part in the unscripted, unexpected and hilarious results.
Play Time: 1 – 4pm

Night Hike

WHEN: May 26th from 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM

Ages 5 – Adult. $10 General Public/$7 CNC Members. Schools out and it’s time to begin your summer adventures. Explore the woodlands and wetlands with a naturalist to see what happens when the sun sets at CNC. Visit with a nocturnal animal and enjoy roasting marshmallows around the campfire!


 

STARLAB

WHEN: May 27th from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM

1 – 2pm (Two, 25-minute sessions). Ages 5 – Adult. Take a naturalist-lead journey through the night sky in Starlab, our portable planetarium.  Find out what constellations, planets and stars are on tap for this season.
