2012 Atlanta Memorial Day Events

Memorial Day Weekend is, for many Atlanta area parents, the first weekend that kids are out of school.   This calls for celebrations, picnics, hamburgers, and don’t leave out remembering America’s troops.

We’ve put together a list of some of the exciting events going on in and around Atlanta, GA this 2012 Memorial Day Weekend.

Memorial Day Weekend Swim the Warm Springs at Roosevelt’s Little White House Historic Site

WHEN: May 26 –  28 at 9:00 am. – 6:00 pm.

Swim in the historic pools built by President F.D. Roosevelt as a place for therapy. Normally kept empty for preservation, the shallow pools will be filled with naturally warm spring water. Tickets may be purchased over the phone with credit card. Space is limited to 80 per session. Reservations suggested. All remaining tickets will be sold first-come, first-served. Ages 6 and older. $20 adults; $12.50 ages 6 to 17; Family Package $80.

Memorial Day Celebration held at Roswell Citiy Hall Faces of War Memorial

WHEN: May 28 at 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Highlights include: Atlanta Wind Symphony Armed Forces Tribute, 21 – Gun Salute, Banks & Shane, and much more.

Memorial Day Weekend at Stone Mountain

WHEN: May 26-28 10:30 am- 8:00 pm

Stone Mountain park honors our troops and their families, in a three-day celebration of American spirit at Atlanta’s largest Memorial Day Weekend celebration. Salute our troops during the Lasershow Spectacular in Mountainvision with a special, extended fireworks finale all three nights. Marvel as the skies above light up in a specially choreographed musical tribute honoring the brave men and women who protect our country. The special fireworks display can be seen Saturday, Sunday and Monday of Memorial Weekend.

Display of Veteran’s Uniforms at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park

WHEN: May 24th – May 25th 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Included are numerous uniforms and other memorabilia from World War I through Operation Iraqi Freedom. All of the uniforms and other items are identified with the veteran’s name, branch of service, and when the veteran served; photographs of the veterans are included with most uniforms. Mr. Ken Myers is the owner/presenter of the display and has provided U.S. military displays in the Atlanta area for the past thirteen years. He will be present to answer any questions.

Memorial Day Weekend at Callaway Gardens

WHEN: May 25th – 28th

Kick off Summer 2012 with a splash! Our Memorial Day Weekend Festival at Robin Lake Beach is better than ever, with events and activities including: 53rd Masters Water Ski & Wakeboard Tournament , Live Music, Specialty Food Vendors, Lowline Customs Car Show, Silver Wings Night Pyrotechnic Parachute Team, Farmers Market, Special FSU Flying High Circus performances, Beach activities, including swimming, Aqua Island, Blaster Boats and Light Striker Laser Tag, Kids Zone, featuring giant waterslide, rock wall and spider jump.

Start of Summer Play Day at Chattahoochee Nature Center

WHEN: May 26th at 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm

All Ages! Come out and play for Memorial Day! Kick off the summer with parachutes, hula hoops, sidewalk chalk, Frisbees and more. We supply the toys, you supply the imagination.
Laughing Matters: Start off Play Day the right way with giggles and guffaws. Laughing Matters’ improvisation will tickle the funny bone as you share your ideas and take part in the unscripted, unexpected and hilarious results.
Play Time: Come out and play for Memorial Day! Kick off the summer with parachutes, hula hoops, sidewalk chalk, Frisbees and more. We supply the toys, you supply the imagination.
Little Miss Muffet Story Time: Join Ms. Juila and the Black Widow Spider for a story and activities all about spiders and insects.

Campout with Dad at East Roswell Park

WHEN: May 26 at 6:30 pm – May 27 at 10:00 am

Pack your sleeping bags and tent and head out for a night of food, games and fun with dad! We will provide the campfire, hot dogs, s’mores, and breakfast treats the next morning! Each person must register. Ages 5 & up, children must be accompanied with a male adult. Fee: $12, residents $18, non residents.

Veterans Remembrance Day at Atlanta History Center

WHEN: May 27 at 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Spend a day in the company of veterans and hear their stories of wartime through personal accounts and memorabilia.  Living history interpreters represent soldiers of previous wars, including World War I and the Civil War, by showing authentic dress, equipment, and vehicles. This program is free to members; included in the cost of general admission for nonmembers.

Atlanta Jazz Festival at Piedmont Park

WHEN: May 26th – 28th

The Atlanta Jazz Festival is regarded as one of the Country’s largest FREE jazz festivals.  It is an annual musical showcase, celebrates jazz legends and up-and-coming jazz greats in venues throughout metropolitan Atlanta during the entire month of May.   Culminating during each Memorial Day weekend, the festival features show-stopping performances at Piedmont Park.

Brew at the Zoo

WHEN: Saturday, May 26th

5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Holly Springs 7th Annual Memorial Day 5K & Fun Run

WHEN: Saturday, May 26th

The 7th Annual Holly Springs Memorial 5K & Fun Run Race will begin at 8:00 am on Saturday, May 26th. The Fun Run will begin immediately following the 5K. All proceeds benefit the Holly Springs Volunteer Fire Department.
