A Mother and Son Day Of Most Unexpected Amazement

I am having surgery Tuesday.  Therefor I am a little on edge.  Anxious.  Stressed.  Worried.  You get the point.   There’s not much that anyone can do or say that will make me feel better.  Two weeks after surgery, then I’ll feel better.

Today, two days from surgery, my daughter woke up at 5am with a cough and a fever.  Out of the blue.  Dark blue.  Totally unexpected.  I have a weak immune system and can’t be around anyone with a fever before surgery.  You can say I’ve been isolated from the world for a few weeks.  I felt terrible that my daughter was sick and I couldn’t help.  My husband had to be at work at 9am in Rome, GA this morning so I had to call my mom and ask her to come pick my daughter up so I wouldn’t be exposed to her.  What a bummer.  My mom spent the day yesterday, volunteering with my son at Chattahoochee Nature Center, so I put a ‘Grandmother wants some alone time with you today since she had alone time with brother all day yesterday!’ spin on it.  She agreed and went on with my mom.

Once my son woke up, and given that it was so beautiful out this morning, I asked him if there was a park he’d like to go to.  Upon searching Georgia State Parks’ website, we decided that we’d go to Sweetwater Creek State Park since that is a state park that we haven’t been to yet.  We ate breakfast and jumped in the car to go on our adventure.   I was looking at this as kind of a last hurrah before surgery.  My son has no clue that I’m so anxious about the surgery and being the adventurous, outdoorsy kind of boy that he is, was looking at it as just another adventure.   Little did he know.

Sweetwater Creek State Park

Sweetwater Creek State Park is about 31 miles from our house and according GPS and Google Maps the estimated travel time to get there was about 38 minutes.  So, we get on I-575 South.  I drive at about 65mph for about 5 minutes.  Then stop.  That’s it.  Shabang!  Let the adventure begin!  We sat in traffic on I-575 and 75 South for one hour before seeing about 40 police cars on the highway and no wreckage.  I thought that was awfully strange.  It turns out that  police had been chasing a suspected armed robber from Cherokee County (our neck of the woods) and apparently were able to apprehend him on 75S right just before the 285 connector.  I have never seen so many police vehicles at a scene in my life!

We finally make it to 285 west and by then I’m feeling worried that we are going to be out too late.  I was anxious about my daughter being ok for my mother for so long.  It was going to take us another 30 minutes to get to our destination and then factor in exploration time, then drive home time.. I was sure we were going to be out to long for my daughter and mother’s liking.  Despite my worries, we kept going and I’m so glad.
