Earth Skills Day at Chattahoochee Nature CenterLiving from the land has been a tradition that was a way of life for native people and the early pioneers. Join us for this family friendly event that reintroduces skills that were once vital for survival. Primitive skills experts will demonstrate skills throughout the afternoon and give you a chance to try some yourself.

  • Rolling Thunder featuring Chipa Wolfe and Samson the Bison: 12 – 4pm

Come out and meet Chipa Wolfe and his live bison named Samson. Chipa shares the connection that the native people have to the land and animals. Prepare to be awed!

  • Earth Skills Club: 12 – 4pm

Members of the Earth Skills Club demonstrate traditional skills including flint knapping, matchless fire starting, cordage making and primitive cooking.

  • Nature Instruments: 12 – 4pm

Rattle a gourd and tap out a tune on instruments made from found natural objects. You can even make an instrument to take home!

  • Stalking Workshop: 12 – 1pm

Mark Warren teaches this special skill that brings you close to wild animals, whether you are an observer, photographer, or hunter.  Learn to emulate the fluidity of fox and the patience of heron while learning the trick of invisible movement.  $10 CNC Members/ $15 General Public; Advance Registration is required for this workshop by November 15 (limited spaces.)

  • Lean–tos, Forts and Spider Shelters: 1 – 2pm

Find some shelter with us as we make lean–tos, forts and spider shelters. A CNC Naturalist will help you create the perfect hideaway using branches, pine needles and other natural stuff.

  • Mark Warren Book Signing: 1:30 – 2:45 pm

Primitive Skills Expert Mark Warren will be signing copies of his new book Two Winters in a Tipi: My Search for the Soul of the Forest.

  • Looking at the Forest through the Eyes of the Cherokee: 3 – 4pm

Discover details of the wild as seen by the ancient Cherokee people. Join Primitive Skills expert Mark Warren as you learn about Cherokee crafts and the woodland materials they used. You’ll also be introduced to wild plant foods and medicines.

Cost: $5 CNC Members/ $10 General Public; Advance Registration is required for this workshop by November 15 (limited spaces.).
