Winter Scavenger Hunt
WHEN:
January 1st – 31st
Take your ears on a scavenger hunt. Can you find or make some of the sounds that make winter downright noisy? Complete this auditory quest and receive points in the Nature Exchange.


 

Story Time by the River
WHEN: 1st Wednesday of the month  at 10:30 AM
Join volunteers for a fun story time at CNC. Using books, puppets, and other props, they tell stories all about nature. Ages 3 – 5.



Creature Feature
WHEN:
Thursdays and Fridays at 4:00 PM
All Ages.Join us every Thursday and Friday at 4 pm for Creature Feature!  Meet one of our native, resident animals with a CNC Naturalist.  Each month will be a different theme so Creature Feature is always exciting! Location will vary so check with admissions desk when you arrive!



Trail Hikes
WHEN:
Saturdays and Sundays at 1:00PM
A CNC docent guides you on a journey through the CNC trails using biofacts and activities to spark your “natural” curiosity.



Feeding Time
WHEN:
Tuesdays and Saturdays at 4:00PM
Join a naturalist for an in-depth look at one of our resident animals as our Wildlife Department feeds them!



Animal Encounter
WHEN:
Sundays at 4:00 PM
Learn about the native wildlife living at CNC through a 30-minute live animal presentation with one of our naturalists or docents.



Chattahoochee: Re-Imagine Our River Film
WHEN:
January 1st – 31st
Come join us for a viewing of our featured film:  Chattahoochee: Re-Imagine Our River. The viewing schedule is:  Monday – Friday at 1pm; Saturday at 11:30 and 3:30; Sunday at 12:30 and 3:30 in Cowie Weiss Theater, lower level of the Discover Center.  See Nature Exchange Naturalists with questions.



Pets are Purrrfect Companions
WHEN:
January 1st – 31st
We love our pets – they have love to give and lessons to share. Check out our mini exhibit about the CNC staff pets and help us add to the exhibit by telling us about your pet. Bring stories, photos, drawings and projects about your furry, feathered, scaly or slimy friend and earn bonus points!



Night Hike
WHEN:
January 5th from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
All Ages, $10 General Public and $7 Members.  Join a naturalist on an outdoor journey to see what happens as the sun goes down and the night comes to life! Hike through the wetlands or woods, visit with a nocturnal animal up close and warm up by the campfire complete with marshmallow roasting.



STARLAB
WHEN:
January 6th from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
Winter is the best time to see the stars! Take a naturalist-led journey through the night sky in STARLAB, our portable planetarium. Find out what constellations, planets and stars are on tap for this season. (Two 25-minute sessions, Ages 5 and up)



Creative Photography with a Digital SLR Camera
WHEN:
January 12th from 10:30 AM – 3:00 PM
This workshop is designed to help students feel comfortable with using hte many features of their digital SLR camera, leaving the “auto” setting behind and stepping into the more creative and fun side of photography. Whether you have just moved up to a new digital SLR or have had your camera for awhile and still wondering what some of the controls on your camera will do, this class is for you.  You will have the opportunity to learn and shoot images with “hands on” experience on CNC grounds.

Home School Science Monday
WHEN:
January 14th from 12:30 PM – 3:00 PM
Learn over lunch about Georgia geology. Afterwards, head to the Nature Exchange for the nature activity of the month. All ages are welcome.



Reptiles! Southeastern Snake Encounter Show
WHEN:
January 19th from 12:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Snakes, Snakes and more SNAKES! Jason Clark, Star of the Animal Planet Series SnakesKin, brings out venomous and non-venomous snakes during this exciting and humorous show. Watch as kingsnaks and rattlesnakes leave their cages behind and meet some of the reptilian friends. Clark share how to identify and be safe around snakes while recounting adventures from wildlife removal emergencies.
The Reptile Wagon, 12-4 pm
Get an up-close view of live, native reptiles in this exciting traveling exhibit from teh Southeaster Reptile Rescue. Snakes, tortoises and even alligators are waiting to be discovered.
Crafty Reptiles, 2-4 pm
Create a slinky snake with Mr. Tim from Camp Kingfisher. Maybe your snake will look like one of the stars of the Southeaster Snake Show.



The Nature Club – Primitive Skills with Dusty Rumley of Bushcraft USA
WHEN:
January 24th from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Join our monthly potluck! Spend your evening socializing with like-minded folks and learning from experts in the field. If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to start a fire by rubbing two sticks together, don’t miss the 2013 Nature Club premier meeting! Bring a vegetarian dish to share, plus plate, silverware, cup and napkin.  Goal is for a trash free dinner!!!


 

Nature’s Healers: Medicinal Plans and Aromatherapy for Women
WHEN: January 26th from 10:00 Am – 1:00 PM
Get a holistic start to the New Year with a fun and interactive look at what Mother Nature has to offer to your health regiment! Join CNC Horticulturist Lisa Cole for this introduction into the amazing world of healing plants. This beginners’ class focuses on herbs and oils used since antiquity to treat a variety of aliments, with an emphasis on women’s needs and particular energizing blends that help to chase the winter blues away. Class includes a hands-on presentation and crafting of floral water and teas for participants to take home.
$25 General Public.$20 CNC Members, Ages 16-Adult, Advance Registration Required by January 21st – limited spaces
