CNC History Hunt
When: June 1st – August 31st
The land around CNC has a long and interesting history. On this challenging hunt, learn about native peoples and families that once called this area home and about historical sites that you can visit at CNC.


Water Water Everywhere in Nature Exchange
When: June 1st – 30th
Throughout June – Meet the creatures that call the CNC ponds home.  Each day we will bring in tiny creatures that tell us a lot about water quality. Check them out under the microscopes and see if you can identify them.


Chattahoochee: Re-Imagine Our River Film
When: June 1st – 30th
Come join us for a viewing of our featured film:  Chattahoochee: Re-Imagine Our River. The viewing schedule is:  Monday – Friday at 1pm; Saturday at 11:30 and 3:30; Sunday at 12:30 and 3:30 in Cowie Weiss Theater, lower level of the Discover Center.  See Nature Exchange Naturalists with questions.


Creature Feature
When: Thursdays & Fridays at 4:00 PM and Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 PM
All Ages.  Join us every Thursday and Friday at 4 pm for Creature Feature!  Meet one of our native, resident animals with a CNC Naturalist.  Each month will be a different theme so Creature Feature is always exciting! Location will vary so check with admissions desk when you arrive!


Trail Hikes
When: Saturdays and Sundays at 1:00PM
A CNC docent guides you on a journey through the CNC trails using biofacts and activities to spark your “natural” curiosity.


Feeding Time
When: Tuesdays and Saturdays at 4:00PM
Join a naturalist for an in-depth look at one of our resident animals as our Wildlife Department feeds them!


Animal Encounter
When: Sundays at 4:00 PM
Learn about the native wildlife living at CNC through a 30-minute live animal presentation with one of our naturalists or docents.


 35th Annual Possum Trot 10K Race and 1 Mile Fun Run
When: June 1st 6:30 AM
The possum is running to benefit the Chattahoochee Nature Center!  Join friends or co-workers to form a team at this annual race presented by the Big Peach Running Stores.  This Fun, Fast and Flat race course along the scenic Chattahoochee River in Roswell on a smooth, certified course allows runners to get in condition for the 2013 Peachtree Road Race as well as qualify.  Register at www.active.com  or @ Big Peach Running Company Stores.  Call 770-992-2055 x 226 for additional information or visit our website at www.chattnaturecenter.org/possum-trot.html. Discounted registration rate of $28 if you register by May 31st. Onsite registration is $35 for the 10K and $15 for the One Mile Fun Run. All participants receive a custom T-shirt featuring the adorable Possum with a great swag bag of goodies.  Post Race festivities and awards presentations take place in the Ben Brady Lakeside Pavilion with free admission to the Chattahoochee Nature Center included.  Our sponsors include the City of Roswell, the Whole Foods Market with healthy refreshments, Aurora Cineplex providing brownies and Pit Stop. Allow time to walk from St. Francis School parking lot on Willeo Road at Azalea.  Overall and Masters Male and Female finishers in 13 age groups receive awards at the ceremony held at the conclusion of the race.  Register online at www.active.com, at Big Peach Running company store; pick-up 5/1-5/30 or mail-in your registration to CNC: 9135 Willeo Road, Roswell, GA 30075. If you register at Big Peach you can pick up your race number when you register.  With mail-in registrations and online registrations, you can pick up numbers on race day only beginning at 6:30 a.m.


James Casto Singer-Songwriter Concert Series
When: June 7th at 8:00 PM
Our 2013 Concert Series with Home by Dark Productions kicks off in the Ben Brady Lakeside Pavilion at the Chattahoochee Nature Center on Friday, June 7th and we are excited!!  James Casto and his crew from Chukkar Farms will be bringing the best songwriters in America to Roswell, GA for songwriter-in-the-round shows.  So, mark your 2013 calendars for the First Friday of every month, May thru October and consider Season Tickets!  Bring your picnic, invite friends and enjoy an incredible night of music in a unforgettable setting.  www.homebydark.com

 Storytime by the River
When: Every Wednesday at 10:30 AM
Ages 3 – 5.  Stories tell us a lot about nature! Join our volunteer librarian as she uses books, puppets and songs to share stories about nature with a new theme each month!


Morning River Canoe Trip
When: June 2nd 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM
There is no need to travel afar when the Chattahoochee River is in your own backyard. Take an urban adventure and experience rich wildlife through our river canoe trips. Join experienced and knowledgeable river naturalists as you re-imagine the river through a canoeing experience.  Learn the history, habitat, ecology and recent issues impacting the local watershed – all while enjoying the serenity the river offers. CNC provides all equipment for participants. Ages 6 – adult, $30 General Public/$25 Members, Advance Registration Required.


 Creative Photography with a Digital SLR Camera
When: June 8th 10:30 AM – 3:00 PM
Just in time for those summer vacations!  This workshop is designed to help students feel comfortable with using the many features of their digital SLR camera, leaving the “auto” setting behind and stepping into the more creative and fun side of photography.  Whether you have just moved up to a new digital camera or have had your camera for awhile and still wondering what some of the controls on your camera will do, this class is for you.  You will have the opportunity to learn and shoot images with “hands-on” experience on CNC grounds. Ages 16 – Adult $60 General Public/$50 CNC Members; Advance Registration Required by June 5th.


Teddy Bear Picnic
When: June 8th 11:00 AM
It’s Get Outdoors Day so to celebrate, so invite your best stuffed friend to a picnic at the Chattahoochee Nature Center!   We will play games, hold a Teddy Bear Parade and make new friends during this special day out. Make sure to bring a picnic and blanket. All Ages, included with General Admission.


River Canoe Trips

Calling all River Rats – it’s time to get out on the River!  Join us for a paddling adventure as you discover the animals and plants that call the Chattahoochee home.   CNC naturalists will lead you on a journey down river as you see it in new ways and discover why this resource is so important.  (Also offered June through October; check the next two CNC newsletters for additional trips.)  The Nature Club Field Trip – Chattahoochee River Headwaters Hike

Pee-Wee Naturalist Summer Series (Ages 3 & 4)
When: June 11th 9:45 AM – 11:00 AM
Its summer and a GREAT time to get your little one outside and connected to nature.  Join a CNC naturalist and explore nature through animal presentations, art projects, and natural world investigations, including trail walks and interactive activities covering Wonderful Water, Powerful Pollinators, and Animal Antics!  $50 General Public/$40 CNC Members (price per session; adult helper required and admitted free) Advance Registration Required by June 6th.


 Canoe 101
When: June 16th 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM
Ages 5 – adult; $15 General Public/$10 CNC Members (price is per person; book a third seat in a canoe and get half off.); Advance Registration is Required (space is limited.)
Want to plan on spending the summer on the River but unsure of where to start?  Well then join us to discover the basics of canoeing including boat basics and paddling techniques.  Spend some time on one of CNC’s ponds to practice your newly-acquired skills.  Perfect for new paddlers from age 5 to adult!


Date Night Canoe Trip
When: June 21st Arrive as early as 4:30pm (Trip at 6pm)
Take a night off as you enjoy the beautiful scenery the Chattahoochee River has to offer. Date night is designed exclusively for adults looking to get away for the evening, relax and connect to the river and its surroundings. Participants are invited to arrive early and stay a bit later to enjoy the grounds and trails of the Nature Center. Bring a picnic dinner with a bottle of wine to enjoy before or after your trip.  This is the perfect setting for a first date, celebrating a special anniversary or just to catch up with a close friend. Canoe trip will end approximately at 8:30 and participants are invited to relax on the grounds till 9:30 PM. $30 General Public/$25 CNC Members; Adults Only, Advance Registration Required.


Nature’s Healers: Medicinal Plants and Aromatherapy for Women
When: June 22nd 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
The summer solstice is upon us and the perfect time for harvesting plants for our class.  Join CNC Environmental Horticulturist Lisa Cole for an introductory look into the amazing world of healing plants.  This class focuses on herbs and oils used since antiquity to treat a variety of ailments, with an emphasis on women’s needs.  Class includes a hands-on presentation, crafting of floral water and teas for participants to take home, and a tour of healing plants which grow at CNC.  $25 General Public/$20 CNC Members, Ages 16 – Adult, Advance registration required by June 19


 Wonderful Water
When: June 22nd 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
A drop of water can be magical. Dive into wet and wild activities all about water, bubble and splash, make water crafts and enter the ‘water Olympics’.  All day we’ll show you how to have fun with water as you dance, play and learn about this amazing resource we can’t live without! This is all included with general admission.

·    Amazing Bubble Show: 11am & 12pm

The Amazing Bubble Show will create bubbles that are out of this world.  Bo the Bubblologist will create HUGE bubbles, super long bubbles, bubble chains, square bubbles, and bubbles in bubbles and even put a live person IN A BUBBLE!

·    The ArtBarn’s Good Clean Fun Crafts: 12-2pm

Farmer Sue of the ArtBarn is making some good clean fun with mud, fish and a little soap. Try your hand at making a fish rubbings (also known as Gyotaku) and decorate mud cakes that are a pretty as a picture!

·    The Sprinkler: 12 – 3pm

The sprinkler is back! Our sprinkler shoots water 12 feet into the air and is sure to get you soaked. Don’t forget your towel!

·    Bubble Time: 1pm

Come and play! Make your own bubbles with Bo the Bubblologist. Using bubble wands made from normal and recycled materials, you can fill the sky with a million bubbles.

·    Water Olympics: 1-3pm

Can you float pennies? How high can you stand water above the rim of a glass? If you have what it takes to win the Water Olympics, come out and show us your stuff.

·    Miss Julia’s Story Time: 3 pm

Miss Julia is ready to make a splash with a Story Time that is all wet!  Join Miss Julia as she reads Water, Water Everywhere, Water Dance, and The Water Hole. This is fun and interactive reading romp for the whole family.


Stand up Paddle Boarding 101
When: June 22nd 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Two times to choose from (2 – 3pm or 4 -5pm); we will begin filling spaces in the first time slot and when it fills we will move to the next one. Get ready for a summer on the river by signing up for a Stand up Paddle boarding class through Walk on Water Adventures LLC.  This exciting new class is perfect for those curious about trying paddle boarding for the first time and for those that have paddled before.  Class will teach entering and exiting the water safely and correct paddling techniques.  Come out and try this fun and exciting way to enjoy our beautiful water ways.   Paddle board, paddle and PFD will be provided. Ages 12 – Adult; $20 General Public/$15 CNC Members; Advance registration required by June 19.


 Creative Photography – Goin to the Next Level
When:
June 23rd 1:00 PM – 4:30 PM
This workshop will help you go to the next level with your photography. Find out what some of the advanced features and controls on your digital camera can do for you to make your images “keepers.” We will do some classroom work and then try out what you learn on the grounds of CNC.  Students should have a basic understanding of the operation of their digital SLR camera. For those that need more help with learning basic controls, the “Creative Use of Your Digital SLR” class is a good starting point (offered Saturday, June 8th). Ages 16 – Adult, $60 General Public/$50 CNC Members, Advance Registration Required by June 19th.


 The Nature Club Monthly Meeting – Herb and Vegetable Gardening: Arugula to Zucchini
When: June 27th 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Just in time for those summer veggies – join Libby Lintel, CNC Unity Garden Coordinator as she presents Herb and Vegetable Gardening: Arugula to Zucchini. Libby will take us on a tour of the Unity Garden and explain about the kinds of soils to use, how much you can expect to yield, how to handle pests and much more. Ages 16 – Adult, $10 General Public/$5 CNC Members.


 Drum Circle
When: June 28th 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM
$5 Donation requested. Come and join the drum circle at the nature center the 4th Friday of the month thru September. Professional drum leader Chuck Cogliandro leads the rhythm as you take part in one of the most basic celebrations of music.  All experience levels and spectators welcome- please bring your own drum or rhythm instrument.

Come out and join us for a completely new way to enjoy the Chattahoochee River through Walk on Water Adventures LLC. Our paddle guides will teach you all the paddle board basics to get you standing and cruising the river.  Paddle board, paddle and PFD will be provided.  Participation in Stand up Paddle Boarding 101 is recommended. $40 General Public/$35 CNC Members; Ages 12 – Adult; Advance Registration required by June 26.


 Night Hike
When: June 29th 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Summer is here and that means that heading out to CNC at night is the PERFECT way to enjoy nature.  Bring a friend or the entire family to hike through the woodlands or wetlands of CNC and discover how active the evening can be in the outdoors.  You will even get to visit with one of our non-releasable nocturnal animals up close.  And the best way to end a night hike is roasting marshmallows around the campfire.  All Ages, $10 General Public/$7 CNC Members.
