At Brookhaven Children’s Dentistry, they believe that good oral hygiene habits at home are the basis for a healthy smile!  Sometimes though, it may be harder to convince your children to be regular brushers and flossers.  They have shared a few tips and pointers with us to make sure your children are getting the thorough home care that they need. Keep reading for more!

What about fluoride tooth paste?

Brookhaven Children’s Dentistry recommends that children transition to a fluoride tooth paste after their 2nd birthday.  At this age, it’s a good idea to use a “smear layer” of tooth paste, just to wet the bristles.  “We don’t want your child to swallow too much fluoride toothpaste” says Brookhaven Children’s Dentistry.  As long as you keep the amount of tooth paste to this “smear layer,” your child will only ingest appropriate levels.

My child does not like brushing their teeth, how do I get them to brush?

Make brushing a fun experience for your family by brushing your teeth together with them.  Sometimes, you can convince your child to brush if you take turns.  For example, you can brush their top teeth, and allow them to brush the bottom teeth by themselves.  Sing your “ABC’s” or “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” twice, while you brush their teeth.  Familiar songs can make your child more comfortable, and help them to brush for an appropriate amount of time.

What about flossing?

Once your child’s teeth start touching (usually between age 3-5 years old) it’s important to floss your child’s teeth.  For younger children, they recommend using a “pick-flosser” such as G.U.M brands pick flossers.  These items have a little piece of floss attached to a plastic handle, and will reduce the likelihood of being bitten by your younger children.
