It is important for your child to see you reading and even as your child enter elementary school, it is very important to set aside time to read with your child. Here are some recommendations gathered from childcare professionals for reading time with your children. These suggestions are great for making reading time enjoyable for everyone in your family.
Make reading time fun for you and your child.
Choose the best time
Choose a time that is best for you and your child. Don’t make reading a chore by “imposing” reading as a daily duty. If you or your child feels tired, select a better time that may work better for both of you.
Give your child your undivided attention. Put away your electronic devices and turn off any distractions. Your attention will demonstrate to your child how much you care about his progress and truly enjoy your time together.
Carefully select books
Become aware of the sort of books your child enjoys most. Take your child to the library and help him choose the books he would like to read. Consult his teacher, preschool, daycare, or childcare professional for help if needed.
Let your child choose
Encourage your child to make his own choice of books. Ask him what he likes about the books he chooses.
Share the activities
Involve your child as much as possible in what you are reading. Read some sentences together and relate events in the story to personal experiences.
Develop a sense of sequence
Help your child develop a sense of sequencing in space and time. (Ask your child to tell you what happened first, and then what happened next.)
- Patiently pace the reading
Children often like to create their own “side-road” stories when reading. They can sometimes become more fascinated with the reading experience, rather than the actual ending of the story. Patiently pacing will give your child time to imagine and enjoy.
- Get comfortable
Let your child cuddle up beside you or sit in your lap while you read. The warm, loving feelings you convey are important to your child, and often even more important than the content of the story.
