Does He or Doesn’t He? Yes, He Does, and It’s Called ‘Brotox’

If a double standard exists when it comes to how we perceive women and men as they age, it appears men are starting to feel the pinch — quite literally — when it comes to being judged by their looks. In an age of selfies, profile photos, and teleconference calls, seemingly no one is spared the tightly cropped examination of every line and wrinkle.

In a culture that values youth, men gradually are realizing they aren’t immune to ageist opinions. Sure, some gentlemen of a certain age still get by on their “distinguished good looks” or “rugged features,” but in a competitive job market potential employees are looking for an edge wherever they can find one.

More than 385,000 men in the United States received BOTOX® Cosmetic injections in 2013, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons®. That’s a 310% increase from a decade ago. There is no indication that trend is slowing down.

“Whether it’s to remain relevant in the workforce or look as good as they feel, more men are embracing non-surgical treatments,” says a statement issued earlier this year from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. “Among male patients, the most common procedures are BOTOX®, hyaluronic acid (fillers) and rhinoplasty.”

Men get about 10% of the cosmetic procedures performed each year in the U.S., including both surgical and non-surgical treatments, according to the ASPS statistics. Minimally invasive treatments such as BOTOX injections, are favored by men because they offer subtle cosmetic enhancement with little or no downtime. But cosmetic surgery is becoming increasingly popular among men, as well.

“Male plastic surgery rates have significantly increased since 2000, and the notion that cosmetic procedures are just for women no longer exists,” said ASPS President Scot Glasberg, M.D. “Men are seeking to regain a more youthful look, improve their self-image and feel better about their appearance. It is great that plastic surgeons have procedures to meet and often exceed their expectations.”

Plastic surgeons and other aesthetic professionals now tailor some of their marketing to men. Dr. Theresa M. Jarmuz, a double board-certified plastic surgeon, offers a “Touchdown Facelift” for male patients that includes 3 different injectables, including BOTOX, at her Atlanta practice, Buckhead Facial Plastic Surgery.

“Their friends will be asking them what they are doing different to look so refreshed,” Dr. Jarmuz says on her website. “It can be our little secret!”

Discretion remains important to men undergoing cosmetic enhancement, even though these kinds of aesthetic procedures are becoming more acceptable across the board. At least that’s that the conclusion of a recent survey conducted in England by a British cosmetic industry website. The site, RightClinic.com, connects people interested in cosmetic procedures with clinics in the United Kingdom.

Its founder told a British publication that the BOTOX boom in England increasingly includes men and he expects it to continue.

“BOTOX isn’t just a treatment for the vain, it’s a great confidence booster,” Dr. Ganesh Rao told the Daily Mirror. “Women have widely adopted the procedure, so why shouldn’t men enjoy the benefits (for) their self-esteem, too?”
