Metro Atlanta families with school children are fortunate to have the longest Christmas breaks in the Southeast. Most school systems don’t go back until Jan. 6th or 7th.

With that in mind, how about getting away to the North Carolina mountains for a mini ski vacation? Beech Mountain is home to the highest ski resort on the East Coast and local tourism officials have created a special incentive for Atlanta-area families.

Just book an overnight stay of any length between now and Jan. 7, and receive a free sled rental to use on thetown of Beech Mountain’s youth sledding hill (which is also free!)

Aside from the sledding hill, you can take advantage of many other snowsports on Beech Mountain. Skiing, snowboarding, snowtubing and ice skating are all available at Beech Mountain Resort.

The resort has several learn-to-ski (or snowboard) programs geared toward children of different ages, as well as adults.

“Skiing is a sport that’s good to have some lessons in the beginning, but once you learn, you’ve got a skill for life,” says Kate Gavenus, Beech Mountain’s tourism director. “So many people don’t realize what a jewel we have up here in the North Carolina High Country. Once they come, they’re hooked.”

And if you’re not into the downhill scene, the resort’s Alpine Village is the place to be. That’s where snowtubing, ice skating and shopping take place. Best of all, you don’t need a lift ticket to participate in the village activities.

Once you exit the ski resort, you’re conveniently in the town of Beech Mountain, home to a nice variety of lodging options, shops, restaurants and other activities.
