Simple Ways to Expand Your Child’s Learning and Development

Simple Ways to Expand Your Child’s Learning and DevelopmentFrom the moment a baby enters the world, the wheels start turning and the learning begins. Some learning will come naturally to your child, like how to eat, smile and eventually talk and walk. As your child grows older however, he will learn more from focused and well-planned learning either in a home setting or in a preschool.

One of the best ways parents can expand their child’s learning is by supporting the child’s educational experience at school and creating a fun, engaging and positive atmosphere towards learning at home.

Engage with your child’s preschool teachers to learn about what your child’s classroom curriculum looks like and how you might be able to supplement lessons at home. Remember that not all curriculums are created equal and you will want to find a preschool with an accredited program and award-winning curriculum in place. Talk to your daycare, childcare, or preschool about the curriculum they are using. The curriculum should include opportunities to build social skills, use technology, and develop your child’s math skills and vocabulary.

Talk to your child about their day and ask open-ended questions that will encourage your child to think about and process what he has learned. Instead of asking, “Did you have fun at preschool today?” Ask “What did you do in class today? How did you feel about the activity? Who did you play with?” and so on. This gives your child a chance to describe his world to you and practice critical thinking skills.

Learning can also take place naturally during everyday activities such as cooking, cleaning and laundry. When you are in the kitchen, encourage your child to help with choosing the ingredients and measuring them according to the recipe. This gives a child a sense of accomplishment, especially if the meal turns out to be tasty! While doing the laundry, explain why you make one pile for white-colored clothing and another pile for all other colors. Since it can sometimes be daunting to have a young child “help” with chores, don’t feel bad about giving him his own pile to sort while you are able to do your own. This has a higher likelihood of keeping the child entertained and the mother sane!

No matter what, it’s important to remember that your child is always watching you for cues on how to engage the world around him. With adults in his life who encourage learning and involve him in creative opportunities, a child is much more likely to enjoy learning throughout his entire life.

A creative and accredited Preschool program will provide infants, toddlers, and preschoolers with a safe and nurturing environment to learn and discover the world around them. When parents are involved in the educational development of their child, everybody wins!
