Celebrate Your Child’s Preschool and Kindergarten Graduation with Class!

As soon as the month of May rolls around, it’s impossible to miss all the graduation-themed party supplies, balloons and colorful bouquets of flowers that appear on store shelves. For students, this is a time of relief and celebratory fist pumps for another school year completed and a job well done. For parents of those students, it is often a time of reflection, strolls down memory lane, and maybe even a bit of anxiety about the future. Children grow up so fast, and graduations are often a bold reminder of that reality.

Even preschool and kindergarten graduations can become emotional events for parents. On one hand, we celebrate the joy that comes with seeing our children achieving another milestone, while on the other hand, we want to hold on to them tightly and never let them go! With each school year, our children learn, grow, and develop into individuals that are going to contribute to the well-being of our society. Taking the time to pour into their education and physical and emotional formation today makes a difference in their tomorrow.

If your child is a student at a preschool, kindergarten or other learning academy, the school will probably host some sort of graduation ceremony for your child at the end of the school year. It’s a good idea to prepare your child for this event. Help her remember how she first felt when she entered the classroom and didn’t know any of the other students or teachers, and then marvel together at how comfortable she feels now knowing that she is loved and cared for by so many people. It is also a good time to look through your child’s art projects and homework assignments from the previous year and celebrate progress. Praise your child for all her hard work and point out specific areas your child excels in! Finishing an entire school year is a big deal and it should be celebrated accordingly!

Make the actual day of the graduation more memorable by baking or ordering a special cake with your child’s favorite frosting and decorations. If it’s ok with your child’s school, bring the cake as a treat for the whole class! If sugar is not your favorite thing in the world, there are alternatives. Make goody bags filled with fun pencils, stickers, and small toys instead! And, by no means, don’t forget the camera! Take lots of pictures of your child in her cute cap and gown. If the school doesn’t provide graduation regalia, make your own graduation cap out of construction paper. Your child’s preschool or kindergarten graduation photo will be fun to compare with their high school graduation photo in 12 years!
