Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Fall Family Programming

The Grammy® Award-winning Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s 2016-17 Family Concert Series, led by Assistant Conductor and ASYO Music Director Joseph Young, will begin on Oct. 30 with the Halloween Spectacular Phantoms of the Orchestra, featuring spooky music and a costume contest. The series will continue on Nov. 27 in Symphony Hall and Dec. 15 at Kennesaw State University with A Family Holiday Special. Families with older children can choose a Compose Your Own series to include any of Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s family-friendly POPS! and holiday performances.

The Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra and Talent Development Program (TDP) will both provide affordable opportunities for families to experience great, live orchestral music this fall. On Nov. 6, Joseph Young will lead the Youth Orchestra in a performance of Elgar’s Enigma Variations in Atlanta Symphony Hall. The Talent Development Program will host its annual Musicale and Aspire Awards on Nov. 13, with performances by TDP students and the 2016 Aspire Award winner and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra trombone, Weston Sprott.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will continue the Music for the Very Young series this season with Meet Our Families: An Introduction to the Instruments of the Orchestra. The series, designed for children three to five years-old and their grown-ups, will introduce members of the woodwind, brass, strings and percussion families in four separate programs – each highlighting one specific family of instruments. At the end of the season, the musicians will join forces to perform as an ensemble, one big family!

Family Fun at the Woodruff Arts Center takes place every Sunday from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m., where parents and children can explore, play, learn and create art in an interactive, family-friendly environment. This fall the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will lead the festivities on Aug. 28, Sept. 25, Oct. 2 and 30, Nov. 6, 20 and 27, and Dec. 4. Symphony led activities will include instrument petting zoos, a backstage tour of Symphony Hall, instrument making stations and more. Support for this program is provided by the Lettie Pate Evans Foundation.
