There is never a bad time to learn about science. In its most basic form, science is all about writing down observations and testing them. This summer is a perfect time to explore all that the scientific world has to offer your preschool child.
One easy way to do that is to go to a local pond and observe the wildlife. Help your child explore their surroundings by doing these three things!
Write down everything your preschooler sees.
Ask them what they see. Birds? Fish? Trees? What else? Be specific. Science needs specific observations to be accurate, so help them get creative and attentive by noting all the details.
Note what changes over time.
This is a super valuable thing when conducting a science experiment: what happens when you wait? Over time some animals show different behaviors, or maybe the pond critters will become more active after they get used to you being there. Showing your child how to be patient with their surroundings can help them learn so much more than just science!
Observe the pond water.
This might sound silly, but pond water is actually vibrant and alive! Even in a jar. When you collect pond water in a jar, your child can actually see tiny organisms swimming around in there! One website has some handy tips for getting the most out of this activity.
