My daughter’s first Pee Wee Naturalist class at Chattahoochee Nature Center

My 3 year old daughter attended her first class at Chattahoochee Nature Center today.   She is taking Chattahoochee Nature Center’s Pee Wee Naturalist class.  The classes include animal presentations, art projects, and natural world investigations – including trail walks and interactive activities.

Today, the kids learned about birds.
Besides getting to see birds up close, the kids got to see bird feet up close, feel owl feathers, and hear bird sounds.  At the beginning of the Pee Wee Naturalist class the kids were given binoculars to use while on the walk.   The Naturalist (teacher) explained to the 3 and 4 year old’s how to use the binoculars and told the kids not to look through them while walking.. good idea!   Next, she showed the kids a few bird feet and taught them about the different types of bird feet and talons.

The Naturalist was great with the kids. Parents stay with the kids during the Pee Wee Naturalist class.  My husband and I had a great time watching our daughter learn about birds and I especially enjoyed learning the different hawk calls.   After the walk the kids made a pine cone bird feeder and then the Naturalist read the kids a couple of books. The class was just long enough at about 1 hour and 15 minutes.

After the class my husband and daughter and I went into Chattahoochee Nature Center’s new Discovery Center where we saw fish, owls, turtles, and snakes.  My daughter is too young to appreciate the Nature Exchange inside the Discovery Center but my 10 year old son loves it!  If you have a 5+ year old, you have to check out Chattahoochee Nature Center’s Nature Exchange.
