Northern Georgia Events

Holiday Gorge Floor Hike
WHEN:
Friday, May 27, 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Saturday, May 28, 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Sunday, May 29, 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Monday, May 30, 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
WHERE: Tallulah Gorge State Park – Tallulah Falls
This guided hike will take you from rim to river while learning about the gorge’s unique environments. Be sure to wear proper footwear (no flip-flops or Crocs). This hike is strenuous and will involve rock hopping and getting wet. Bring a lunch and lots of water. For ages 10 and older. Register in advance. $5 plus $5 parking.

Memorial Day Blast
WHEN: Friday, May 27 through Monday, May 30, 1 p.m. – 8 p.m.
WHERE: Unicoi State Park and Lodge – Helen
Come join in on relay races, field day activities, campfire, music concerts, and a hoedown. $5 parking.

Make Your Own Splint Footstool
WHEN:
Saturday, May 28, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
WHERE: Smithgall Wood Conservation Park – Helen
Weave a twill seat on a sturdy maple footstool base. The stool measures 9” x 12” x 8” high. It’s an amazingly simple and satisfying project. Instructor: Jan Stansell of Black Mountain Crafts. Register by May 20. $30 plus $5 parking.

Visiting Artist Series

WHERE: Unicoi State Park and Lodge – Helen
Each week a different artist or craftsperson will be demonstrating their art or craft and will have samples of their work for sale. The program lasts each weekend from Memorial Day Weekend – Mid-November. $5 parking.

Saturday Evening Concert Series
WHEN:
Saturday, May 28
WHERE: Unicoi State Park and Lodge – Helen
Musicians perform each Saturday at 8:00 p.m. Some of the best musicians in the area perform a variety of music from Appalachian Mountain, Bluegrass, and Southern Gospel music. The program lasts from Memorial Day Weekend to mid-November. These programs will be “pass-the-hat” donations for the musicians. $5 parking.

Junior-Senior Fishing Rodeo
WHEN:
Saturday, May 28, 9:30 a.m. – 11 a.m.
WHERE: Victoria Bryant State Park – Royston
Anglers 16 and younger, or 62 and older, can catch catfish and compete for prizes. Sponsored by the Friends of Victoria Bryant State Park. Register by 9 a.m. Rodeo will be at Fishing Pond #2. $5 parking.

Sunday Mountain Hike

Sundays, May 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29, 4 p.m.
WHERE: Panola Mountain State Park – Stockbridge
This hike allows visitors to see Panola Mountain up close, as the Ranger explains why it’s protected and what we can do to preserve the natural beauty of granite outcrops. Bring sturdy shoes, water, bug spray, and your camera. Register in advance. $7 plus $5 parking.

Spring Wildflower Hike
WHEN: Sunday, May 29, 2011 1 PM to 3:30 PM
WHERE: Sweetwater Creek State Park
This moderately strenuous 2-mile hike with elevation changes will visit beautiful areas to admire our late spring woodland wildflowers. $5 plus $5 parking.
