Everyone knows February is the month of love, with Valentine’s Day as its peak. Everyone knows, too, that there is a different meaning for “love” for every person. How can you teach your child what it means to love someone this month?
Here are three suggestions to teach this fundamental lesson to children.
Teach with a pet.
Pets can be one of the best ways to teach children how to love. For one, they’re super cute and fluffy and easy to love, and they make us laugh—except when they misbehave or have bathroom accidents in the house. When our pets do something wrong, typically during the training period, it’s the perfect time to show a child how to look beyond the mess and continue to love as the teaching continues. Loving someone means forgiving and caring for them unconditionally.
Read a good love story to your child.
Books for children contain many stories that show the meaning of love. The Giving Tree, for example, has been rated one of the best children’s stories ever, and it’s all about sacrificial giving and love.
Love your child!
This last suggestion is obvious, but loving your child is the best way to teach love to your child, not only this Valentine’s Day, but every day. They will learn more from your example of showing love than any book or idea may give.
