In the Nature Exchange – Wild About Insects

Biologist E.O. Wilson says that there are approximately 10,000,000,000,000,000,000 (10 quintillion) insects alive today. That’s a lot of legs! Stop by the Nature Exchange and learn about these fascinating creatures. Discover where in the world our insect trading specimens come from, meet caterpillars from the butterfly garden and make a craft insect of your own.


Summer Scavenger Hunt- Your Watershed Connection

WHEN:  June – August

What  is your connection to the Chattahoochee River Watershed?  Learn about
what makes up a watershed as you search the Nature Center for plants and
animals that call this watershed home. Complete the scavenger hunt and
earn Nature Exchange points! Scavenger Hunt starts in the Nature
Exchange.


Story Time by the River

WHEN:  Wednesdays  at 10:30 AM (No Storytime July 4th)

Join volunteers for a fun story time at CNC. Using books, puppets, and other props, they tell stories all about nature. Ages 3 – 5.


Creature Feature – Incredible Insects!

 WHEN: Thursdays and Fridays at 11: 00 AM & 4:00 PM and Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 PM

All Ages. CNC is home to many different creatures – even six-legged ones!  Join a naturalist as you explore what insects you may find at CNC as well as the animals that might make a meal of them!


Trail Hikes

WHEN: Saturdays and Sundays at 1:00PM

A CNC docent guides you on a journey through the CNC trails using biofacts and activities to spark your “natural” curiosity.


Feeding Time

WHEN: Tuesdays and Saturdays at 4:00PM

Join a naturalist for an in-depth look at one of our resident animals as our Wildlife Department feeds them!


Animal Encounter

WHEN: Sundays at 4:00 PM

Learn about the native wildlife living at CNC through a 30-minute live animal presentation with one of our naturalists or docents.


James Casto performs with Roxie Dean and Jim Parker

WHEN: July 6th at 8:00 PM

A portion of proceeds to benefit Wilkins Parkinson’s Foundation
In June, James Casto is joined by hit songwriters Roxie Dean and Jim Parker.  Roxie Dean wrote the Grammy nominated “When I Think About Angels” for Jamie O’Neal, the hit “Why They Call It Falling” for LeAnn Womack, as well as cuts by Reba McEntire, Sara Evans, Tracy Lawrence, and more.
Jim Parker wrote multiple cuts for country legend John Anderson, including “Chicken Truck” and “More Than A Feeling.”  He’s also had cuts by Aaron Tippin and others.  Jim is host of the popular “Jim Parker Presents…” Songwriters Concert Series, which brings in some of the biggest names in the songwriting world to the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, AL.
This will be a great night as a portion of the proceeds will benefit Wilkins Parkinson’s Foundation.  So, get a table for 2, 4, 6, or 8, invite family and friends, bring food and beverages, and enjoy an incredible night of music under the Ben Brady Pavilion on the beautiful grounds of the Chattahoochee Nature Center in Roswell.


Tree Climbing

WHEN: July 7th from 10:30 AM – 1:00 PM

Ages 6 – adult. $35 General Public and $30 Members. Advance Registration Required by May 30th. Recreational Tree Climbing is now at CNC!   Climbing ropes in trees is great fun for the family.  This 2½ hour introductory climb will get you up high in a tree for a new perspective of your favorite nature center.  The fee also includes admission to CNC for the day.


Ask A Gardener

WHEN: July 7th from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Are you hoping to get a garden started this summer?  Would you like to have a tour of our Unity Garden? Would you like to have a chance to chat with our garden coordinator? Here’s you chance! Grab you hat, some sunscreen, and a bottle of water and stop by for some informal gardening tips, and a chance to take a look at what we have growing over the summer.


Date Night Canoe Trip

WHEN: July 7th from 6:00 PM – 9:30 PM

Adults Only. Advance Registration Required. $30 for general public, $25 for members.
Arrive as early as 4:30pm (Trip at 6pm)
Take a night off as you enjoy the beautiful scenery the Chattahoochee River has to offer. Date night is designed exclusively for adults looking to get away for the evening, relax and connect to the river and its surroundings. Participants are invited to arrive early and stay a bit later to enjoy the grounds and trails of the Nature Center. Bring a picnic dinner with a bottle of wine to enjoy before or after your trip.  This is the perfect setting for a first date, celebrating a special anniversary or just to catch up with a close friend. Canoe trip will end approximately at 8:30 and participants are invited to relax on the grounds till 9:30 PM.


Backyard Campout

WHEN: July 7th 5:00 PM – July 8th 10:00 AM

$45 for public families, $35 for member families (price per tent). Advance Registration Required. Brush up on those camping skills and get ready for the end of school with a camping trip to the CNC!  Sleep out under the stars, enjoy night hikes, play games on the meadow, visit with nocturnal animals, roast marshmallows around the campfire and more!


River Canoe Trips

WHEN: Saturdays and Sundays, June, July and August at 6:00 PM

Ages 6 – adult. $30 General Public/$25 Members. An outdoor adventure is waiting for you… There is no need to travel afar when the Chattahoochee River is in your own backyard. Take an urban adventure and experience rich wildlife through our river canoe trips. Join experienced and knowledgeable river naturalists as you re-imagine the river through a canoeing experience.  Learn the history, habitat, ecology and recent issues impacting the local watershed – all while enjoying the serenity the river offers. CNC provides all equipment for participants. Advance Registration Required.


Canoeing 101

WHEN: July 8th and 21st from 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM

Ages 5 – Adult. Advance Registration Required. Learn the basics of canoeing and put your skills to the test. This is a great introduction course into the world of canoeing. Learn parts of the boat discover different strokes and practice canoeing on a CNC pond. This is a fun opportunity for kids and adults alike to experience canoeing or brush up on skills. Attend Canoeing 101 and become a confident paddler!  All equipment is provided.


Insect Field Day

WHEN: July 8th 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM

Ages 7 – adult. Come take a close-up look at the insects that are all around!  Observe and identify insects we collect in nets and learn why these small creatures are vital to our world.


Pee-Wee Naturalist Summer Series (Ages 3 & 4)

WHEN: Tuesdays, June 12, July 10, August 7

$50 Non-Members/$40 Members (price per session; adult helper required and admitted free)
Pre-Registration Required. It’s summer and a GREAT time to get your little one outside and connected to nature.  Join a CNC naturalist and explore nature through animal presentations, art projects, and natural world investigations, including trail walks and interactive activities covering Camouflage Kids, Search the Skies for Butterflies, and Plant Playtime Olympics 2012!


13th Annual Flying Colors Butterfly Festival  

WHEN: July 14th from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM
July 15th from 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM

$10 General Public/$8 CNC Members, Free for ages 2 and under. The Flying Colors Butterfly Festival delights everyone all weekend at the Chattahoochee Nature Center when the air fills with the beating wings of hundreds of beautiful butterflies! There will be butterfly releases, crafts, live entertainment, and more!  Join us for this very important fundraising event for the Chattahoochee Nature Center!


Night Hike

WHEN: July 21st from 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM

$10 General Public, $7 Members. All Ages. Join a naturalist on an outdoor journey to see what happens as the sun goes down and the night comes to life!  Hike through the wetlands or woods, visit with a nocturnal animal up close and enjoy a summer campfire complete with marshmallow roasting.


Drum Circle

WHEN: June 27th from 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM

$5 donation requested. Join us in a new monthly event!  Drum the stars into the sky. Bring your djembe, bongos or other rhythmic instrument and take part in one of the most basic celebrations of music.  All experience levels and spectators welcome.


Nature Meditation Workshop

WHEN: July 26th and 29th

$20 General Public/$15 CNC Members. Ages 16 – Adult. Advance registration required by July 23rd. These workshops will help you reawaken your capacity to experience, participate in, and communicate with the tremendous world of life that exists all around us and within us. Join us for gentle stretching (suitable for all ages), breathing, walking, and meditation in the beautiful natural setting of Chattahoochee Nature Center.


Animal Olympics Exhibit

WHEN: July 28th – August 12th

Can you walk like an alligator or bleat like a black-necked stilt? Discover how some native Animal Olympians win the gold in walking, jumping, eating and flying. Put your wild side to the test as you try to match their amazing abilities.  Complete an Animal Olympic score card and receive your own prize!  Exhibit courtesy of the US Fish and Wildlife Service.


The Nature Center Olympics

WHEN: July 28th

All Ages. Kick off the Summer Olympics by playing in the CNC Summer Olympics. Show your skills on the obstacle course, test your mind in the Nature Exchange and compare yourself to animal Olympians in the Animal Olympics Traveling Exhibit.
