Great Atlanta Bicycle Parade – September 8th

Great Atlanta Bicycle Parade 2013Free bike decorating at 1pm

Ride up Peachtree to HIGH Museum at 2pm

The aim of The Great Atlanta Bicycle Parades is to help Atlanta culturally identify as a bicycle-friendly city with the honor of kicking-off the activities of Atlanta Streets Alive. Atlanta is a fun place to ride! And it is now home to the largest, most inclusive and creative bicycle parades in the southeast. Creative events based in civic participation foster enduring bonds between people and place. One thousand festive bicycles riding up Peachtree Street and across Atlanta’s neighborhoods is the kind of jubilant shared memory that will come to define our sense of our city.

The function of the Parade art program is to invent new bike art and to reach out to Atlanta’s communities with bike art workshops for both children and adults, ranging from simple decorations to complicated soft sculpture. Offering a platform for the creative expression of bike-love generates genuine and playful unity across a diverse population.

The Great Atlanta Bicycle Parade began in 2012 with an independent artist grant to Chantelle Rytter from the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs in partnership with Atlanta Streets Alive, Atlanta’s open streets project sponsored by the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition. Atlanta Streets Alive is drawing 20,000 people. The parades’ ridership is averaging 500. A participant commented, “This is the critical mass the city’s been waiting for. This is a turning point for Atlanta.” Atlanta Streets Alive returns to Peachtree Street on September 8th 2013 and then to the Highlands and Boulevard on October 6th with The Great Atlanta Halloween Bicycle Parade! Come for a ride! Your participation is what makes the bike parade great.
