3D printing is all the rage these days.  It seems like soon we’ll all have 3D printers in our home, but not the amazingly high tech 3D printers that MODA has, we’re sure!  The Design Bar in the MODA lobby is a great place for your child to exercise their creativity and learn about 3D Printing!

3D Printing from Minecraft: Lighthouses, ages 8-15

In our 3D printing from Minecraft classes, kids ages 8-15 take their gaming skills to the next level as they design buildings and that can be printed on our Makerbot® Replicator® 2 Desktop 3D Printers (due to print times, items will be ready for pick-up within a few days).

Once a common feature in coastal towns, lighthouses serve as beacons for maritime navigation, providing warnings against dangers such as shallow waters and reefs. Students who register for these classes will learn about the history of lighthouses and the technology that makes them work. They’ll design and build a lighthouse in Minecraft and then use Redstone circuitry (digital electronics) to install a light in it.

In these classes, kids:

  • become familiar with basic architectural forms
  • learn basic principles and concepts of architecture and engineering as they construct buildings, real and fantastical
  • Become familiar with the basic circuitry functions available in Minecraft
  • learn about 3D printing, its materials & its processes

Participation is $25 for Members, $30 for non-Members. Fee includes admission to the museum’s current exhibition for the participant and 1 adult.

A popular element of fantasy stories set in colder climates, ice palaces blur the line between natural and artificial structures, combining ornate architecture with the elegant simplicity of crystals. In this class, students will design and build their own Ice Palace, learning about the formation of ice crystals and how architecture can mimic natural forms in the process.

Intro to 3D Design: Build a Robot, ages 8-15

From Bumblebee to Baymax, robots combine our fascination with science with our search for friendship, as they are machines that can be both companions and protectors.

Using an easy-to-use 3D design software, kids will learn how to manipulate basic shapes, symbols and texts to create a robot that can be printed on our Makerbot© Replicator© 2 Desktop 3D Printer (due to print times, items will be ready for pick-up within a few days).

In this workshop, students will

  • become familiar with a basic 3d design software
  • learn how to design an object by manipulating basic shapes, symbols and texts
  • learn about 3D printing, its materials, and processes
  • learn about the evolution of automata in fiction, along with the history of artificial intelligence in real life.

Participation is $25 for Members, $30 for non-Members. Fee includes admission to the museum’s current exhibition for the participant and 1 adult.
