If you’re looking for a family-friendly place to take your kids in northwest Georgia, head to the Tellus Science Museum. From the special events to the interactive exhibits, this place will keep your kids’ attention, and parents can appreciate it too.

The Tellus Science Museum has ongoing events, and also holds special events throughout the year. For example, the Tellus lecture series includes monthly presentations on topics such as former NASA astronauts who have been on the Hubble Telescope, and experts in paleontology. Lectures usually take place in the evening around 7pm. Special events include National Astronomy Day, which is celebrated annually in the spring around the time of the first quarter moon.

The National Astronomy Day celebration includes a feature called Family Science Night. While National Astronomy Day consists of many activities over the span of 12 hours, as its name suggests the Family Science Night begins after it gets dark outside. Events during Family Science Night include a guided nighttime star walk, and stargazing through telescopes on the Tellus’ front lawn. One of the greatest hands-on exhibits at the museum is the fossil dig and gem panning. Your kids can look through bins of sand for stones and gems in the gold-panning part of the exhibit. They’re sure to get excited about the search, especially because they can take their found treasures home with them. The fossil digs encourages your kids to pick up a brush and start looking for items like shark teeth, shells, and even dinosaur bones.

One of our favorite exhibits to visit while at Tellus Science Museum is The Weinman Mineral Gallery.  Discover how the Earth was formed billions of years ago and walk among hundreds of beautiful gems and minerals in the Weinman Mineral Gallery.   Featured exhibits include more than 50 cases with a variety of gems, gold, and some of Georgia’s most prized minerals.

Night owls will want to attend Tellus’ Night at the Museum.  When the front doors close, the Museum comes to life at Tellus Science Museum!  Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012 from 6 PM – 10 PM as scientists, authors and adventurers, real and fictional, take over Tellus in a fun and educational night perfect for all ages.

Don’t pass up on an opportunity to visit this impressive 120,000 square foot facility. Your kids will be dazzled by the 120-seat planetarium and 80-foot Apatosaurus, and they’ll learn a lot too. Best of all, parents on your trip can also learn a little something, and the whole family will have plenty to talk about on the drive home.
