Planning a Back-to-School Clothes Swap Party

Parents of infants, toddlers, and preschool children know how fast a child can grow out of their clothes. Parents are often left with clothes that are too small, gently used, or new with price tags still on them. Instead of leaving the clothes hanging in the closet until the next major cleaning day, consider hosting a Back to School Clothes Swap Party. Your friends, neighbors, and family with children of similar ages will likely have a wardrobe full of clothes their children can no longer wear. Before you do your back to school shopping, you may be able to build your child’s wardrobe and spend a lot less money.

Here’s how:

  • Make a list. Think about people you know who have children with ages near and slightly older than your children.
  • Choose a date. Choose a weekend date that you think most of your friends are available.
  • Invite. Invite parents who also have clothes to offer to set up a display. You can also invite parents who do not have clothes to stop by for a good deal. It’s always a good idea to invite through several platforms. You can consider an email invite using an online event service. You can also invite your friends via a Facebook event invite, and of course you can make a few phone calls. If you have a community organization or homeowner association you might consider posting the event there as well.
  • Prepare. It’s important to create room to display the clothes for easy browsing. You will need a few garment racks, tables for folded clothes, and shelves for shoes and other items. Other parents who are displaying clothes can bring their own clothes rack and tables too.
  • Label Your Clothes. Put labels on sections of clothes to make the browsing easier. It’s always fun to make an even trade with a parent when you both have items the other parent needs. Have fun making deals for everyone to get what they need.
  • Plan enough space for children to try on clothes and relax. Parents of small children will often need to bring their children with them on a weekend outing. Plan to have child friendly stacks, and maybe an animated movie to entertain the children while parents are shopping.
  • Be creative. If you and your friends are getting together make it a fun event. Play your favorite music, invite your friends for snack afterwards, and enjoy your time together.
