Atlanta’s nationally acclaimed Alliance Theatre is pleased to present The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, based on the beloved novel by C.S. Lewis, as part of its Alliance Family Series. Rosemary Newcott, the Sally G. Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth and Families, directs this magical, one-act, family friendly production.
The play follows the adventures of four siblings through the wardrobe and into the land of Narnia. Here they are caught up in a struggle between the mysterious, magical lion Aslan and the White Witch, who wants this astonishing country, its talking animals and amazing creatures, frozen in perpetual winter. C.S. Lewis’s classic of love, faith, courage, and giving, with its triumph of good over evil, is one of the most-enjoyed stories of our time.
The inspiration for Rosemary Newcott’s direction of the Alliance’s production is movement and transformation. She will be utilizing unique choreography to physically illustrate the story as the characters are telling it.
“This story is about transformation on so many levels,” said Newcott. “The wardrobe transforms into a portal to a magical land. The world of Narnia transforms from winter to spring. In several cases, characters undergo huge personal transformations. In the Alliance production, the concept of transformation will be supported by a cast who will utilize movement to create physical metaphor that enhances the story telling. For example, some of the physical elements of Narnia, such as the lamppost, will be created by multi-talented actors with acrobatic/dance skills. Our goal is to fully serve the story, characters and themes of this remarkable and beloved story of faith and self-sacrifice.”
The cast for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe includes Alexandra Ficken (In Love and Warcraft) as Lucy, Patrick Wade as Edmund, Lauren Boyd (The Tall Girls) as Susan, and Markell Williams as Peter. The magical characters of Narnia will be played byJeremy Aggers (Edward Foote) as Mr. Tumnus, Enoch King (Marcus: of the Secret of Sweet) as Aslan, Tess Malis Kincaid (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) as the White Witch, Jelani Jones (The C.A. Lyons Project) as the White Wolf, and ensemble member Ashley Chasteen (CATS).
On March 13, from 1:00 p.m – 4:00 p.m., the Woodruff Arts Center and Alliance Theatre will host a free Family Fun Festival. Experience free family programming including acting workshops, performances of The Lizard and El Sol by the Alliance’s Kathy & Ken Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young, performances of Music for the Very Young by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and free admission to the High Museum of Art. Other activities include a face painting, a photo booth, costume making, props making, an instrument petting zoo, and more. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe will have 12 public performances – Saturdays and Sundays at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., fromFebruary 27 – March 20 on the Alliance Stage (except for February 27, when the performance times are 3:30 p.m. & 7:00 p.m.; and March 13, when the performance times are 1:30 p.m. & 4:00 p.m.). Opening Night is February 27, 7:00 p.m.
